Lon Chaney-Erik, The Phantom
Mary Philbin-Christine Daaé
Norman Kerry-Vicomte Raoul de Chagny
Arthur Edmund Carewe-Ledoux

Universal Picture’s silent film staring Lon Chaney, Sr.,  The Man of a thousand faces in the roll of Erik the disfigured genius who haunts the opera.  In his portal of the Phantom he gives off an incredible realistic feel of the character.  Passionate and terrifying at the same time, Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera is still the best as far as Leroux’s novel goes.  Accomplished through pain staking shots and incredible make-up this film has positively the best unmasking scene ever in all the history of Phantom of the Opera movies.  Mary Philbin as Christine does a somewhat hammy job, but somehow gets the point across to the viewer.  The set of the Opera house still stands today on the Universal Studio back lot in Hollywood, Stage 28.

THE PHANTOM OF THE MOULIN ROUGE (1925)?

John Gilbert-Cheri-Bibi
Leila Hyams-Cecile
Lewis Stone-Costaud
Jean Hersholt-Herman

Directed John S. Robertson, based on the book by Gaston Leroux Cheri-Bibi. This movie was to star Lon Chaney, but he died before he was to make it (he was also to start in Dracula). An illusionist and escape artist and magician is accused of murdering his fiancée's father and sentenced to the guillotine. Innocent but filled with bitter anguish escapes prison and goes into hiding from the police.  Compelling if dated film captures demented anguish within its abused hero. (This film was originally suppose to star Lon Chaney, but due to his untimely and tragic death it stared an other actor)

Claude Rains-Erique Claudin
Nelson Eddy-Anatole Garron
Susanna Foster-Christine Dubois
Edgar Barrier-Raoul D'Aubert

Universal Picture’s color remake ventures into a totally different story line altogether.  This time Erik is now Erique Claudin, Who not only gains a name change, but a last name as well. This movie, although very beautifully shot does not even come close to Leroux’s novel.  The Phantom a violinist in the opera’s orchestra; during the retrieval of his manuscripts gets himself burned by etching acid do to a strangulation and murder, runs of screaming thus becoming the deformed Opera ghost we all know so well. This movie is Quite a disappointment to the common book fan, although entertaining. Claude Rains assumes the roll of Erique, Susanna Foster as Christine and Nelson Eddy plays the like hero.

Directed by Terence Fisher
Herbert LomThe Phantom (Professor Petrie)

Heather Sears Christine Charles

Staring Herbert Lom  as The Phantom (Professor Petrie), Heather Sears - Christine. Hammer Productions color version is positively the most off version ever made with assuming the same title. The story is set in a London's Opera house where a young girl wishes to become a singer at the opera. Latter finds the director has other plans for our Christine.  Befriended by the half owner we see a story unfold. The Phantom is not scene till the end of the movie in which we find out that this is just an other acid burned psycho and nothing more. Uncreatively masked and incorrigibly violent we see the opera Romeo and Juliet he wrote, which was stolen, performed by Christine under the Phantoms teachings. This story has a new character which resembles Igor with a little bit of Quasimodo. In my opinion it should have a rose pulse a negative sigh. I hate this version. I bought the movie with out viewing it first, stupid me, and now it hides in the back of my movie closet. Just for a few examples why I hate it; Christine looks like a guy, Phantom is pudgy and hits Christine when she does not obey him, there is some random character who I guess is like Igor...uh ok, and I found my self rooting for Raoul. Bad bad bad!!!!!!!

Director. Gene Levitt. Perf. Jack Cassidy and Skye Aubrey. MGM. This made for TV movie has everything you’d expect from a Hollywood Phantom. The Phantom hides beneath the studio back lot for some thirty peaceful years until the studio owner decides to sell the lot for quick cash. An enraged and very suave Phantom emerges to protect his territory, killing all who challenge him. Cassidy is delightful as Carl, the Phantom, and Skye Aubrey puts in a good performance as the owner’s daughter who becomes first his hostage and then his love interest

Directed by-Robert Markowitz
Maximilian Schell-Sandor Korvin/The Phantom of the Opera
Jane Seymour-Maria Gianelli/Elena Korvin
Michael York-Michael Hartnell
Jeremy Kemp-Baron Hunyadi

Jane Seymore and Maximilian Schell star in CBS's made for TV movie.  It was broadcasted in 1983. The setting is in Hungary Budapest before the first world war. Yet another acid in flicked Phantom, but there is so much more to this film that meets the eye.  An orchestra leader loses his opera ingénue wife to suicide in a lake after a bad review one day after her debut. He then seeks out the one who wrote the  review and in doing so get burned in the brawl.  He will emerge later when a new singer, Maria, appears and captures his heart. This film features some interesting takes on the story, and the unmasking scene is close to Leroux’s expiation. With lines very close to the original novel.  As I watched this movie I saw where ALW, Yeston and Robert Englund's versions got their inspiration. I fell in love with Phantom and I think this is one of my favorite versions. Definitely a must see.

1987- (Phantom of the Opera) Cartoon

This is an animated version that's pretty hokey, but remains semi close to the original. Phantom is more cute then ugly, but is convincing. I never watch it because the animation is terrible, but it's fun to see it at least once.

1988-(Phantom of the Ritz) Horror?

Staring Peter Bergman. A modern day retelling. Phantom is disfigured by a car fire caused by his own drunk driving. Take sup residence in and abandoned theater which is turned into the Ritz a 1950's rock and role palace sounds a little like Phantom of the Paradise to me.

Robert Englund-Erik Destler/The Phantom
Jill Schoelen-Christine Day
Alex Hyde-White-Richard Dutton
Stephanie Lawrence-La Carlotta
Molly Shannon-Meg (New York)
Emma Rawson-Meg (London)

Staring Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund. This one is a horror version I suggest that it's not for the kiddies. Erik Destler? Played by Robert is an ok Phantom, but not very passionate. Who seems to be able to time travel some how and finds the reincarnated Christine and brings her back by way of knocking her out. She awakes in England not France in an opera house and suddenly flips to her old self remembering nothing of her other present day life.  Phantom who has sold his sole to the devil so that his music can last for ever has become a blood thirsty maniac who some how loves Christine. He offers her music or love and we never find out what she chooses. Richard aka Raoul who happens to the partial owner of the opera sets out to rescue Christine and in doing so lights Phantom's layer on fire...oopse. Some how sending Christine and Phantom hurling back to the present, where she again remembers nothing until she rips Phantom's mask off made from human skin. All in all it has a pretty good story line, great colors, and a nice Masquerade and grave yard scene.

Derek Rydall-Eric Matthews
Pauly Shore-Buzz
Kari Whitman-Melody Austin
Rob Estes-Peter Baldwin

Derek Rydall stars as the Phantom along with Polly Shore who plays a Persian type character. The movies is pretty cheesy. It was a good idea, but they did a horrible job of making it a movie. A year after Melody's (Aka Christine) boyfriend Eric burns to death in a mysterious fire, she vows to put her traumatic past behind her. She falls in love with a reporter who is like a Raoul type character, but she soon find out that some one else has an eye on her.

David Staller stars as Phantom. This is more of a comedy version and was taped with alive audience. David's interpretation is very different then other Phantom's, but is very convincing. The make-up is excellent and the story is some what promising with a twisted ending that leave the view asking what in the heck?

It's "A remake of 'Song at Midnight,' a classic 1930's movie see Ye Bang Ge Sheng 1961. Even though this version is very different with some fairly disturbing  Japanese traditions I really liked it. The Phantom or Mr. Song is kind of pathetic, but he has some redeeming qualities in the end. It was very entertaining even though it is dubbed.  You soon forget that it is. I suggest this versions be added to any collection.
